We often receive questions about the process of shipping a puppy — understandably, many wonder if it’s safe, how it works, and whether it’s stressful for the puppy.
Common concerns include:
Will my puppy be scared?
How long will the trip take?
Is it hard for the puppy to be alone in a crate for so long?
Let me put your mind at ease by explaining how we handle puppy shipping with care and safety as our top priorities.
Shipping a puppy alone to a new home may sound daunting or even cruel, but in reality, it is a carefully managed process designed to minimize stress. With years of experience shipping puppies safely, I can assure you the puppies are well cared for throughout the journey.
Airlines have strict policies regarding animal transport — they do everything to ensure the puppies’ safety to avoid liability and customer dissatisfaction. We take extra steps to prepare each puppy for travel: we tape feeding instructions to the crate, provide frozen water bottles that slowly thaw during transit, and include comforting items like toys and a soft bed of shredded newspaper to nestle in.
The typical flight time is around 4 to 6 hours. Before booking, we confirm exact flight schedules to avoid delays and keep you informed at every stage. Your puppy will arrive the same day it is sent, often within just a few hours.
To help your puppy feel secure, we include a favorite chew, like a pig’s ear, and sometimes a sock with my scent on it. These small comforts make a big difference in reducing anxiety.
Often, suitable homes for our puppies are outside driving distance, and shipping becomes the most practical option. We would never consider shipping if it wasn’t safe — your puppy’s well-being is our top priority.
When I first shipped a puppy years ago, I asked the shipping company about safety. Their response reassured me: puppies only travel on approved airlines with specialized pet-safe programs. They fly in the passenger section, accompanied by trained pet nannies who attend to their needs. Your puppy will breathe the same fresh air as the pilots and will never be placed in the cargo hold.
For the highest level of care, we offer “Nanny Shipping.” A trusted airline nanny will accompany your puppy throughout the entire flight, providing constant attention and comfort. This is the safest and least stressful way to bring your puppy directly to your arms.
Shipping costs vary widely depending on many factors, including:
The type of transport (air vs. ground)
Size and weight of the puppy
Distance and route
Cost of an airline-approved travel crate
Taxes and fees
Cross-country flights generally range between $300 and $1,000, while private ground transportation can cost $2,000 to $6,000 or more.
We understand the hesitation some pet parents feel about shipping — after all, puppies are living beings with feelings, not objects. If possible, picking up your puppy in person or meeting halfway is always an option.
However, for many, shipping is the most convenient and practical choice to welcome their new family member safely and efficiently.
Thank you for considering McGraw Basset Hounds. We look forward to helping you bring your new puppy home with the utmost care and love.
